Repeat Guests Return for More Than Just the Hunt

This wasn’t Sherman’s first rodeo at the lodge. He’s been coming here for nine years, and with good reason: warm beds, big breakfasts, and even bigger adventures. According to Sherman, the only year he didn’t take home a trophy was the one where a hacking cough got the best of him. Even then, he said the lodge treated him “better than most family members.” That’s not just hospitality—that’s kinship, backwoods-style.

Sherman makes the twenty-plus hour trek from Virginia in his pickup, ready for another round of black bear and moose hunting. The guides? “Top-notch.” The food? “Lots of bacon, eggs, apple crisp, and a lobster-steak dinner that makes it hard to get up from the table.”

As for fishing? Well…that’s where things get interesting.

The One That Didn’t Get Away—But Did Get Strapped to a Muffler

Sherman’s favorite, ahem, memory at Libby’s Lodge involves a sucker fish, a mischievous mood, and one very unsuspecting hunter. After a successful cast, Sherman decided his fish wasn’t going in the fryer, it was going on a muffler. Yes, you read that right.

“Put a fish on this guy's muffler. Left. Went home. Took a whole week to find. Smelly for a long time. He didn’t have a clue who did it.”

All week long the truck owner kept asking, "What the hell stinks?" He even washed out the back of his truck and dug under all the seats. He had no clue about Sherman wiring the fish to his muffler. By the time he found it, Sherman had returned home and Travis got blamed for it.

It was the fishiest prank north of the Allagash, and we’re pretty sure the target of this prank still checks under his truck to this day. If you ask us, that kind of humor is just part of the bonding that happens out in the wild—with moose watching from the bushes and beavers acting like they own the place (because, honestly, they do).
